MVTHS hires new treasurer

MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Township High School Board of Education Thursday hired Ron Kirsch as the new school treasurer.

Kirsch, a Mt. Vernon resident, replaces former MVTHS treasurer John Ashby, who stepped down Oct. 1 due to a job change.

The treasurer position is part-time, and Kirsch will work closely with MVTHS Finance Director Angie Brentlinger several days a month to monitor the district's financial status.

“It's obviously a part-time position and I'm just trying to help keep the internal controls in place and help with segregation of duties,” Kirsch said.

The MVTHS Board approved hiring Kirsch at a special meeting Thursday. His salary will be $500 a month.

Superintendent Michael Smith told the board he spoke to about four potential candidates for the position. Also, two individuals from outside the area contacted the district about applying.

MVTHS advertised for the job through local media and the Internet.

Smith said it was Kirsch's wealth of experience that made him ideally suited for the position.

“He had an excellent financial background and experience and training,” Smith said. “The qualifications were of the type we were looking for.”

Kirsch currently works for Jeff Donoho Insurance in Mt. Vernon, where he has been for eight years.

Prior to that, he worked for accounting firms for over 16 years, and spent nine years in the commercial lending side of the banking industry.

To Kirsch, serving as a school district treasurer seemed like a natural fit.

“In fact, for several years I audited school districts when I was in public accounting,” Kirsch said.

Kirsch also has a personal connection to MVTHS. Three of his four children graduated from the school and one is currently enrolled there.

The MVTHS Board took no other action at Thursday's special meeting as the new treasurer's appointment was the only agenda item.
