MVTHS Foundation dinner set for Nov. 9

MT. VERNON —Tickets are on sale now for the Mt. Vernon Township High School Foundation’s Fifth Annual Dinner Nov. 9.

Organizers say one of the chief highlights of the evening will be an announcement of the foundation’s major fundraising project for the year — a planned upgrade of the high school’s wireless network.

The $20,000 initiative is called Project SWIFTT, Students’ Wireless Internet For Today and Tomorrow. It is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

“We will work on it throughout this school year,” said Foundation President Tom Jackson. “It will supply 22 new access points in the campus, along with routers and switches to make everything operational.”

The annual dinner will take place at the Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn. The reception begins at 5 p.m., and the dinner and program will start at 6 p.m.

Individual tickets are $50 a piece and a table for 10 costs $500.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the MVTHS Foundation, a nonprofit group that works to provide “excellence in education” at the high school, Jackson said. The dinner also helps to publicize the foundation, he said.

“It’s to raise awareness of the Mt. Vernon Township High School Foundation (because) a lot of people don’t know we’re here,” Jackson said. “It’s to raise awareness and funds.”

According to Jackson, the wireless upgrade is sorely needed at MVTHS.

The school recently changed its policy to allow students to bring their own wireless devices to class, but to log in using the campus network.

Also, starting this school year, all freshman students received a Kuno 4 tablet device to use in class.

Both of these programs, Jackson said, are putting stress on the school’s current wireless system.

In addition to the wireless project announcement, the annual dinner will feature a performance by the MVTHS Concert Choir. Also, the foundation will reveal the MVTHS Teacher Grant recipients and the MVTHS Distinguished Alumni.
