Trash contract under consideration

MT. VERNON — The city council will be discussing two options for its new trash contract, one which includes curbside recycling.

The existing contract for trash collection in the city will expire at the end of the month, and one company has presented bids for the next 3-year contract — Republic Waste. The previous contract was with Midwest Waste, however, Republic bought the company and has been fulfilling the contract in its place since the acquisition.

The city requested for bids from seven trash contractors with alternate bid provisions for 12-month landscape waste removal and for curbside recycling. During a council workshop last week, City Manager Ron Neibert was directed to draft two contracts for consideration during the regular meeting which will be held on Monday — one with the existing services and 12-month landscape waste removal instead of the 9 month removal contracted previously — and the other with 12-month landscape waste removal and bi-weekly curbside recycling.

The cost for trash service with no recycling will be $12.63 per month for residents; the cost for trash service with curbside recycling will be $16.49 per month for residents.

In other business, the council will:

n Hear a capital projects report;

n Hold a second reading on an ordinance to re-zone property at 1714 North Street from R-3 to I-1 for property owned by Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity;

n Hold a second reading on an ordinance authorizing ceding private activity bond authority to Southeastern Illinois Economic Development Association;

n Hold a first reading on an ordinance to vacate an alley located behind the McDonald’s restaurant on Broadway;

n Discuss a resolution reclassifying certain public utilities and sanitation accounts for accounting purposes;

n Discuss a resolution approving the park concession stand agreement;

n Hear a proclamation for National Telecommunicator’s Week; and

n Discuss the re-appointment of Sherry Meadows to the Mt. Vernon City Housing Authority Board.

The council will meet 7 p.m. Monday at the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park.
