Volunteers sought for plan

The Register-News

---- — MT. VERNON — The city is looking for volunteers throughout the community to help with the Comprehensive Plan review and update process.

“We will be starting the process in July,” said Mayor Mary Jane Chesley. “We will be using committees previously established.”

The Comprehensive Plan was approved in July 2009, after more than a year of work by the city and citizen volunteers. Chesley has described the plan as designed to be a “living document” requiring updates as finances and priorities change.

“We have done a lot of work in the last five years,” Chesley said. “The council told the citizens we would update the Comprehensive Plan in five years, and it’s time to do that. It’s amazing where we are after five years of work.”

Committees for the Comprehensive Plan during its inception were Quality of Life, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Land Use and the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee.

Chesley asked members of the Council on Monday to decide what committee they would like to be involved with.

“Last time, the council members were ex-officio members of committees,” Chesley said. “We will be working with committees previously established.”

Work on the updated plan is expected to get underway in July. A list of projects which have been completed and re-prioritized that are in the current plan is being prepared as the first step in the process.

Chesley said anyone who would like to get involved with the Comprehensive Plan update may contact her at City Hall.
