MT. VERNON — Registration dates for the annual Christmas Food Basket program sponsored by the Jefferson County Ministerial Association have been scheduled.
Christmas Food Baskets, formerly known as Christmas for the Needy, is an annual outreach ministry, which has been providing baskets of food to needy households in Jefferson County for over 40 years.
“In all the years we’ve done this, we’ve only had one family not qualify,” said the Rev. Gene Tucker, spokesman for the Ministerial Association. “Our goal is to provide food for as many families possible who are in need.”
Two dates have been scheduled for those who qualify to receive a basket of food to sign up. The dates and times are noon to 4 p.m. on Nov. 1 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 2.
Signups will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall, 1100 Harrison Street in Mt. Vernon.
Anyone who is interested in applying to receive a basket should bring some form of identification, as well as proof of income.
The ministry is sponsored by the ministerial association and is underwritten by the donations of many people in the area.
Tucker said it takes about $23,000 to $24,000 in donations to serve the families who sign up.
“We’re about $10,000 short of doing this right now,” he said.
If people want to donate they can send a check to the Jefferson County Ministerial Association, P.O. Box 575, Mt. Vernon, 62864.
Baskets will be delivered on Saturday morning, Dec. 21.
Volunteers are needed to assist in the signing up process. Interested persons may contact Rev. Tucker at 242-3434. Volunteers will also be needed to pack and help deliver the Christmas baskets.
