MT. VERNON —
Jefferson County residents looking for places to go to usher in the new year on Monday night will have several choices, including secular and non-secular activities.
The band “Mixed Company” from Marion will be performing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge, according to Lodge Manager Charles Wimberly. Dining room specials will also be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and free champagne will be distributed for members and their invited guests just before the stroke of midnight.
Wimberly said the lodge is also offering free ham and beans from noon to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
A local band, “No Issue” will be the headline performers from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon, according to a post spokesman. The first 100 patrons on New Year’s Eve will receive free hats and horns to help ring in the new year.
No plans have been scheduled at American Legion Post 1193 in Bluford or the Eagles Lodge at 901 Prairie Ave. in Mt. Vernon, according to club spokesmen.
No one could be reached at VFW Post 1376 in Mt. Vernon, the VFW Post in Waltonville, or the Moose Lodge in Mt. Vernon.
Two area churches have also planned activities on New Year’s Eve.
Christian Fellowship Church of Mt. Vernon will have an informal gathering starting at 7 p.m. Monday at the home of Scott and Dana Mattingly; and First Baptist Church of Bluford will have a youth lock-in from 8 p.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. Breakfast will be served before the youth are released, according to information from the church.
