After 28 years, the Mt. Vernon branch of Johnston Funeral Home will be closing its doors.
The location at 122 N. 10th St. will close Thursday, Jan. 31, but the Ina location will remain open.
“We were having building issues beyond what we think is feasible to fix,” said Brad Johnston.
The location has been a funeral home for nearly 100 years, since it was the Myers Funeral Parlor in the 1920s.
He said all employees of the Mt. Vernon location, mostly Johnston family members, will be relocated to the Ina funeral home.
Those who have booked pre-need arrangements with the funeral home will still have access to the Mt. Vernon office for any questions they may have. All prearrangements will be honored through the Ina location or through local churches when the need arises.
Any family that wishes to transfer to Hughey Funeral Home or Newell Funeral Home may do so as well, information states.
Bruce Johnston said he felt it had been an honor to serve the people who called upon his funeral home.
“We’re not leaving town mad,” he said, adding that the consolidation is purely economic.
He said working in the Mt. Vernon location allowed him and his family to make many connections.
“We were able to meet a lot of people we other wise wouldn’t have met,” he said. “I have made some lasting friendships that I otherwise wouldn’t have run across, and that’s been really special.”
Anyone with questions or wishing to transfer to another funeral home for services may call Johnston Funeral Home at 242-0604 or 437-5335.
