A couple from Kansas City, Kan., were injured during a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning.
According to the Illinois State Police, Charlie Taylor Jr., 62, was at the 86 mile post on Interstate 57 going north when Taylor told police he fell asleep while driving.
The 2000 Lincoln sedan he was driving left the roadway near the median before crossing back over both lanes of travel and leaving the roadway to the east. The car came to a stop after hitting a tree.
The passenger of the car, Linda K. Taylor, 57, was trapped in the car and had to be extricated. Both were transported to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon by ambulance.
Charlie Taylor Jr., was ticketed for unlawfully driving on the shoulder.
