---- — MT. VERNON — Applications for Schweinfurth Foundation grants are now available and being accepted by U.S. Bank, N.A.

The Schweinfurth Foundation Trust was created by the late Dr. Carl Lincoln Schweinfurth, a Mt. Vernon native, philanthropist, educator, world traveler, businessman and former chairman of the board for U.S. Bank, N.A. Dr. Schweinfurth named U.S. Bank as the trustee of the foundation.

The Schweinfurth Foundation was established for the benefit of the greater Mt. Vernon are specifically to promote classical music performance, enjoyment and education; to promote beauty and aesthetics in the community; to develop and implement programs for the recreation and education of our youth; and to promote international education and understanding.

Grants will be limited to programs and projects that further one or more of the purposes of the Foundation. An applicant must also qualify as a not-for-profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Cod for consideration; therefore, grants will not be made to individuals. Grant requests will be reviewed by an advisory committee appointed by various organizations in the Mt. Vernon community. The current period for grants to be disbursed will be between May 1, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2014.

Recipients of 2013 grants were the Casey Middle School Music Department, Field Community Consolidate School District 3 music program; First Presbyterian Church, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, Jefferson County Historical Society; Lifeboat Alliance Family Shelter, Mitchell Foundation, Mt. Vernon City School District 80 Foundation, Mt. Vernon Primary Center, Mt. Vernon Township High School, MVTHS Band, MVTHS District 201 Foundation, MVTHS music, MVTHS orchestra, the Belle Rive Attendance Center of Opdyke-Belle Rive school district, Rend Lake College Foundation, Special Olympics Area 14, University of Illinois Jefferson County Extension and YMCA of Jefferson County.
