City building tops $5 million

MT. VERNON — Construction in the city went up dramatically in November, thanks to the $4.37 million exterior renovation of Times Square Mall.

Interior and exterior improvements and renovations to the mall were approved by the City Council in September. The renovations include new signage, a new facade, landscaping and a new building in place of the former Times Square Liquors location on Broadway.

Interior renovations are also underway, making way for new tenants Hobby Lobby and Big Lots. In addition, several mall retailers have moved from one space to another — staying in the mall — and renovations of interior retail spaces are also underway. Among the mall retailers with permits issued in November were Kirlin's Hallmark with renovations estimated at $150,000 and Mt. Vernon Eye Care with renovations estimated at $16,861.

Additional retail permits issued for the month are:

n Central Christian Church, 324 N. 12th St., to install a perimeter fence at no estimated cost;

n Vanex, Inc., 1700 Shawnee St., to install a fence at an estimated cost of $20,281;

n Asian Buffet, 415 S. 52nd St, for renovations at an estimated cost of $165,000;

n Dollar General, 1310 Salem Rd., to construct a new store at an estimated cost of $600,000; and

n Gallery 223, 120 S. Ninth St., for renovations at an estimated cost of $160,000.

Signage permits issued in November were:

n Dollar General, 1310 Salem Rd., to install a sign at an estimated cost of $6,813;

n Archway RV Park, 9746 Illinois Route 15, to install a sign at an estimated cost of $1,630;

n Archway RV Park, 9746 Illinois Route 15, to install a second sign at an estimated cost of 1,947;

n Joy Global, 4111 N. Water Tower Place, to install a sign at an estimated cost of $7,850;

n Magnum Steel, 200 Shiloh Dr., to install a sign at an estimated cost of $10,000;

n Vaporz, 604C S. 42nd St., to install a sign at an estimated cost of $1,500;
