MT. VERNON — — Head Start’s enrollment is full, said City Schools District 80 Assistant Superintendent Aletta Lawrence.

She said there are 233 students currently enrolled in District 80’s Head Start program, and that enrollment is watched every month.

Lawrence said Head Start’s standards recently changed, and now the program has an outcomes-faced focus with an explicit focus on family outcomes.

She said a team has been identified to create a template for their goals and expectations for aligning with the new Head Start standards.

Head Start students in November and December met with Santa Claus and put on Christmas programs three times last week, she said.

Dental Safari, a Carbondale-based mobile dentist, visited Benjamin Franklin Early Childhood Center in October and November, making follow-up visits for children who needed urgent care.

Lawrence said Head Start staff took half days in November to allow them to train to help out with Special Olympics.

She said Head Start staff are also helming a class called “1-2-3 Magic,” a parenting class for parents of Head Start students.
