MT. VERNON — — The final plans have been made for the 2014 Relay for Life of Jefferson County.

The event will be held July 13, with the theme, "Heroes Unite to Fight for a Cure."

"This year we've added a costume contest," said Ashley Withrow, co-chair of Relay for Life. "Each team is creating their own cancer fighting super hero. The teams will present their super heroes at Relay. The heroes will walk around the track and help raise donations for their team. We're excited to see all the superheroes we've got."

The annual event will get started at 6 p.m., although concessions open at 4:30 p.m. and music by Faith Revival will get underway at 5 p.m.

The opening ceremony will start at 6 p.m. with a welcome and an opening prayer by John Ashby. The American Legion Color Guard will present the colors and Rachel Hall will sing the national anthem. Event chairs Withrow and Jeri Hopkins will give the welcome.

A survivor speaker, committee recognition and team recognition will all happen before the survivor lap, which will be at 6:35 p.m. During the survivor lap, Lora Greathouse and Rachel Hall will provide music. The caregiver lap will take place next.

"This overnight event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those we have lost and provides the community with an opportunity to unite and fight back against this disease," information from Withrow states. Withrow said she is excited about having additional children's activities, such as a bouncy house, face painting and games.

Entertainment will include the FighBack Cermony with Ronald McDonald Magic Show, Hawkins School of TAe Kwon Do, Music by the Relay Rockers — John Scrivner and Dr. David Walters. Isolated Incident will perform following the Luminaria Ceremony.

Withrow said the Luminaria Ceremony is one of the most touching parts of Relay.
