MT. VERNON -- —
An O'Fallon area man died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash shortly after 2 p.m. at mile marker 96 on Interstate 57.
The man was operating the bike. There was also a female passenger. Names were not being released Saturday.
The crash occurred after the motorcycle hit a large bump in the road. The bike then went out from under the rider and he and his passenger hit the guardrail, said Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks.
Marks said the man was pronounced dead after being brought to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. The female passenger suffered a fractured leg, but is recovering, Marks said. Both the rider and the passenger were wearing helmets.
“That probably saved her life,” Marks said of the helmet.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Mt. Vernon Police Department, and the Illinois State Police responded to the crash. The state police is handling the investigation, Marks said.
