Dancing With Our Stars now seeking dancers

The Register-News

---- — The call is going out to all amateur dancers in the community as plans for the 5th Annual Dancing With Our Stars event are underway.

“We’re in the process now of seeking dancers and sponsors,” said Tricia Higgins of Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois. “We like to have eight routines performing. ... It’s about any type of dance, from ballroom to hip hop and free style. We hope to have solos, couples and groups.”

The event has grown since its inception, and Dancing With Our Stars last year raised $20,000 for area Girl Scouts.

“People continue to talk about the evening long after the event is over,” Higgins said. “Our dancers are people in our community, dancing for a good cause and helping make a great night of fun.”

Dancing With Our Stars will be July 27 at the Holiday Inn. Plans call for a cocktail hour and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the dance competition at 7:30. After the local stars take to the floor, guests can dance until midnight thanks to disc jockey Fred Klapetzky, according to information from Girl Scouts.

Higgins said local “celebrity” dancers will compete in the event. The winners will receive the Dancing With Our Starst mirror ball trophy.

“They compete based on the entertainment level of their routines and support from the crowd,” Higgins said. “There are judges, and winners are also chosen by the amount of funds raised by members of the crowd who vote for them.”

Judges provides the first element to the scores, in the second, dancers accrue points for each donation from supporters. The mirror ball trophy goes with the team with highest overall score at the end of the evening.

The host for the evening will be Jo David Cummins of Community First Bank of the Heartland, and Brandon Bullard, executive director of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will serve as co-host. Celebrity judges for the evening will be Mike Beard of The Insurance Store; Mary Beth Mezo of Mt. Vernon Township High School; and Brian Mooney of Studio B.

All proceeds from the event are used to provide financial assistance to at-risk girls, to maintain and improve Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois camps, and develop the Girl Scout leadership programs for nearly 14,000 girls throughout Southern Illinois.
