MT. VERNON — Area residents commemorated the beginning of Easter weekend with a Community Good Friday service.
The event, sponsored by the Jefferson County Ministerial Association, included dramatic readings from the point of view of those present during the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus — Pontius Pilate, Simon of cyrene, Barabbas, a soldier, the nailer, one of the thieves, Mary the mother of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene and a modern day Christian.
The Good Friday service was hosted by First Presbyterian Church. Members of the committee which organized the service were Dan Henry and Gene Tucker.
“During the service, we meet some of those who experienced that first Good Friday, as they might have experienced the events of that day,” information on the service states.
Those who participated with the readings included Andrew Clark of First Presbyterian Church; Kim Diaz of St. Mary Catholic Church; David Eadie, United Methodist pastor, retired; Dan Henry of Kingdom Seed Ministries; Sylvia Howard of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Father John Iffert of St. Mary Catholic Church; Victor Long of First United Methodist Church; Bobby Mooney of the United Methodist Children’s Home; Jeff Stewart of Good Samaritan Regional Health Center; Gene Tucker of Trinity Episcopal Church and Susan Wells, who provided music and is a member of First Presbyterian Church.
