---- — MT. VERNON — The Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation is getting ready to unveil a new concept for bringing foot traffic back to the downtown streets.
The UpStart Art Mart will be open for the Taste of Mt. Vernon on April 18. From 5 to 8 p.m., ticket holders for Taste of Mt. vernon will get a sneak peek at the arts attraction and shopping destination. Local potters, painters, jewelers and print makers will be setting up shop to sell their wares in the UpStart Art Mart.
“Thanks to the presence of Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mt. Vernon has long been a thriving community for artists to live and work in, as well as for art lovers to visit,” information from DMDC states. “The UpStart Art Mart will give the local arts community an outlet to merchandise artwork, and provide a much-needed ‘shopportunity’ for those looking to keep it local. The UpStart Art Mart will add another Jefferson County destination to compliment visitors to Cedarhurst and the Sothern Illinois Artisans Center.”
The UpStart Art Mart is located at 805 E. Broadway, and operated by volunteer manager Jessica McDermott, a local artist and art teacher at Rend Lake College. At this time, volunteers with the shop are recruiting high-quality, hand made goods to sell in a gallery setting.
The UpStart Art Mart will be open Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. after a grand opening on April 26.
