MT. VERNON — District 80 Schools have scheduled a special hearing for 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to hear public comment on the district’s fiscal year 2014 budget and to possibly approve the spending plan.
Superintendent Mike Green referenced the budget hearing at a meeting Wednesday night of the District 80 Board of Education.
The hearing could not be held at Wednesday’s meeting because the budget is still considered on display for the required 30-day public comment period.
Specific budget figures have not yet been discussed by the board, but Green said he anticipates a more detailed report at next week’s hearing.
At this point, though, the 2014 budget “looks very good” as the district has been “on budget all year,” Green said.
“We’ll have the final figures for the board next week,” Green said. “But we’re on target, it’s been a good year, I think we’ll have a good report next Tuesday.”
Also on Wednesday, the District 80 Board approved a $36,836 bid from Jax Asphalt of Mt. Vernon to complete a maintenance project at the Dr. Andy Hall Early Childhood Center this summer.
The work will involve redoing the blacktop on the school’s playground area, as well as adding a new
bus lane, Green said.
“What’s important is just that the students will have a smooth and safe surface,” Green said, adding the current blacktop is in dire need of replacement. “It’s gotten older and it’s become more of a safety issue for students.”
Jax Asphalt was the only firm to submit a bid for the project. However, about seven companies expressed interest, Green said.
The project is being funded out of the district’s budget, Green said.
In addition Wednesday, the board discussed the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for 2014-2015.
Green revealed Casey Middle School will not qualify for the program next school year because the state determined the school does not have enough students on free and reduced lunch. The district’s other schools have qualified.
