Balloon event gets bigger

MT. VERNON — The Balloons Over Mt. Vernon event promises to be bigger and better than its inaugural year.

The event, part of the annual Fall Fest activities, will include rides, a glow and special shape balloons and will take place Oct. 17 through Oct. 19. All proceeds from Balloons Over Mt. Vernon go to the United Way of South Central Illinois.

On the Friday evening, there will be a baloon glow at the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport, and a family area manned by United Way agencies.

“We will also be offering tether balloon rides this year at $10 each,” said Jennifer Witzel, coordinator of the event. “Country Financial has agreed to sponsor this for us, which we think will be a huge hit. The tether balloon will be at the airport Friday evening and Saturday morning. Then, Saturday evening, they will be able to set up on the football field to help draw folks downtown with the other events occurring there.”

Also new this year, Wilkey’s has agreed to sponsor a pancake breakfast on Saturday, 18, and a flight will happen on Saturday morning near the pond at the airport. Saturday evening, balloons will fly over the downtown area.

Sponsorships are still being sought for the event, Witzel said.

“We are offering sponsorships for $300 and $600 this year,” Witzel explained. “If a balloon ride is on your bucket list, or you want to be part of an epic event which makes children old and young smile, then you will want to jump on board with Balloons Over Mt. Vernon.”

A Full Hot Air sponsorship of $600 includes a balloon ride for two, your name on an event banner at the airport, a basket banner on one of the balloons, your name on event shirts and your name on advertisements for Balloons Over Mt. Vernon. The Up, Up & Away sponsorship of $300 includes a balloon ride for one, your name on an event banner at the airport, a basket banner on one of the balloons, your name on event shirts and your name on advertisements for Balloons Over Mt. Vernon.

Witzel said the special shape this year will be “Rocket” from Louisville, Ky., and is sponsored by Lowery’s Pub.
