MT. VERNON — The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and its members are being targeted by a scam.
According to information sent out by the chamber, a company identifying itself as Premier Maps is contacting local businesses claiming to sell ads for “chamber maps.”
“The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is not affiliated with this group,” information from Chamber Executive Director Olivia Majerkin states. “Nor are we currently selling ads for our maps.”
According to Michaela Scattone, Chamber marketing director, the Chamber found out about the scam from a Chamber member.
“We had someone call us and say, ‘they are trying to sell us ads and I think we may have participated and bought these ads in the past,’” Scattone said. “They said it didn’t seem to add up and they decided to call the Chamber.”
Scattone said the business which reported Premier Maps was not given a phone number for the company.
“After doing some checking online from other Chambers, it appears they target chambers, so we put out an alert immediately,” Scattone said.
According to information online, while Premier Maps is a business, several chambers have been targeted throughout the United States have been targeted, with chambers putting out notices they are not authorizing selling of advertising of maps.
Scattone said although the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce has published maps in the past, the work was not done by this company.
“The businessman did the absolute best thing by checking with us,” Scattone said.
Scattone said the Chamber is contacting the Better Business Bureau with the complaint.
“If someone gets a call, they can contact us and we will take their contact information and forward the complaint to the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois. ... We’re always looking out for our members and want to take care of them. If we can keep something like this from happening to one of our members, we will take the measures to do so.”
