Salute to Freedom planned

MT. VERNON — The city's celebration of July 4 promises to have plenty of activities for families, according to Tourism Director Bonnie Jerdon.

"We have planned an entire evening of fun for families to come out and enjoy by the lake at the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport," Jerdon said.

The event will be held on July 4, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

"At 5 p.m., the concession stands with wonderful food will also open as well as the Kids Zone, which will have bounce houses, face painting and games for the kids to enjoy," Jerdon said. "The DJ will start the music for everyone to enjoy as well."

Midwest Sound and Light will provide the DJ and music, a partnership with the city which has been going on for the past 14 years.

New this year are two other performers — Rainbow the Clown, and Wendy who is a magician.

"Rainbow the Clown is a famous clown in Mt. Vernon," Jerdon said. "She has performed at local events in the past. She is an excellent balloon twister and will be interacting with kids in the crowd. That should be very entertaining for children and families."

At 8 p.m., Jerdon said a magic show will take place on the main stage by Wendy.

"Wendy is also from Mt. Vernon — a local performer," Jerdon said.

"Her magic show will last about 45 minutes on the main stage before fireworks."

This is the first year for the main stage show to be a magician, as previous years have seen bands performing.

"We wanted to mix it up a little bit this year," Jerdon explained. "This will cater to a younger crowd and be more family entertainment."

Fireworks by Central States Fireworks will get underway about 9 p.m. The choreographed show usually lasts about 22 minutes, according to Jerdon.
