Wine class to be offered July 9

MT. VERNON — The Healthy Woman program and RARE Chophouse are presenting a special Wine and Cheese Pairing Class from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 9 at RARE, 224 S. 10th St.

Organizers have dubbed the event a “Ladies Night Out.” The class, led by local wine enthusiast Dr. Jacques Papazian, will cover the fundamentals of wine, wine tasting and appreciation, and more.

During the program, participants will get to sample a variety of fine wines from countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal. They will also get to try artisan cheeses and fruits from RARE’s collection.

The event is intended to be both educational and fun for those who attend, said Debi Richardson, director of marketing and public relations for Crossroads Community Hospital, which sponsors Healthy

“I hope they have a good time,” Richardson said. “I hope they can take something away from it … they can use to be healthier and happier.”

Studies have shown drinking wine moderately can have cardiovascular health benefits, Richardson said. Also, enjoying yourself and being with friends can improve mental well-being, she said.

This is the first time Healthy Woman and RARE have held an event of this kind.

Richardson said the class is part of an effort by Healthy Woman to offer more hands-on, enjoyable activities in the community.

Future events will include a wine and water color program with the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in September, and a Holiday Make It Take It craft-making program in November, she said.

“We’re looking ahead to doing more of these types of events,” Richardson said.

The array of wines featured at the July 9 class will include Reds, Whites, blends and a dessert wine paired with a “sweet creation from RARE’s Pastry Chef,” states a Healthy Woman news release.

Brandon Bullard, marketing director for RARE, said the program should be an effective way to educate the public and show off the many different types of wine available at RARE.
