Gordon Fore and Richard Ward are spending their summer vacation working in the oil fields near Albany, Texas.

Paul Horton is the new commander of the American Legion.

Hubert Griffith, high school teacher, has accepted the responsibility of alum admissions counselor for Millikin University in Decatur for the Mt. Vernon area.

Linda Mays, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Mays of Mt. Vernon, has been chosen as one of the six Southern Illinois University coeds to serve as a family hostess during the July 18 Methodist Holiday at the Du Quoin Fairgrounds.

The 63rd annual Mt. Vernon State Fair opens this Sunday for seven days and nights of horse racing, rodeos, horse shows and other events.

Vachel Patrick “Pat” Dowler, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Dowler, has been appointed to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Wendy L. Hampton, 18, daughter of Mt. Vernon, is stationed as the only female security guard at the U.S. Air Force Base in the Azores Islands.


Frank Charles Sonsini of Springfield, Va., and formerly of Mt. Vernon, was recently selected by the U.S. Jaycees as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America for 1979. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dante Sonsini of 433 S. 20th St.

Boy Scouts from Mt. Vernon spent the week of June 24 at Camp Joy, located southwest of Carlyle. Those attending were William Jones, leader; Rob Fagan; John Jones; Morris Grooms; Mike Chenoweth; Jim Williams; Gary Williams; Brian Edmison; Darrel Heard and Todd Thomas.


The 33rd consecutive annual reunion of the Mt. Vernon Township High School class of 1926 was held June 24 at First United Methodist Church.


The Bradshaws Mt. Vernon Colt League Baseball team won the Area Tournament at West Frankfort with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Gallatin County.
