MT. VERNON — Two area students are the recipients of the inaugural Lon McHaney Memorial Scholarship offered through the Jeff-Co Schools Federal Credit Union.
Scholarship winners are Emily Oxford of Benton Consolidated High School and Randi Rae McCoy of Mt. Vernon Township High School. The Honorable Judge Mike McHaney presented the awards to the students at their schools’ respective Honors Awards Night. Judge McHaney is the son of Lon McHaney, founder of the credit union.
Two $300 scholarships were established to help assist high school graduates in continuing their studies at a university, college, trade or vocational school. Oxford plans on attending Rend Lake College and transferring to Eastern Illinois University majoring in elementary and special education. McCoy will be attending Central Florida University in Orlando majoring in bio-chemistry.
Jeff-Co Schools Federal Credit Union was established by a group of educators in 1973 led by Lon McHaney, who served as principal of Hall School in Mt. Vernon at the time. The Jeff-Co Schools Federal Credit Union board of directors is pleased to provide a scholarship in the name of the organization’s founder for credit union members or their children. The credit union currently serves employees, students, volunteers and their families of Jefferson and Hamilton County schools, Ashley Consolidated School and Rend Lake College.
The credit union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration. For more information about the scholarship program or the Jeff-Co Schools Federal Credit Union, call 244-5197 or visit www.jeffcocu.com.
