MT. VERNON — A tentative schedule of events has been announced for the 2014 Mt. Vernon Fall Fest set for Oct. 17, 18, and 19.
Organizers say this year’s celebration will feature a wide range of activities, including brand new events and returning favorites.
“Our Festivals Committee, we gave them a challenge to kind of make it bigger and better,” said Bonnie Jerdon, director of Mt. Vernon tourism. “I think they’ve responded very well to that challenge. … They’ve stepped up nicely.”
The theme of the festival is “Toons, Tunes and Balloons” and throughout the celebration there will be cartoon characters, music tunes and hot air balloons, organizers said.
Many of the event times are not yet available, but a list of activities has been released.
On Friday, Oct. 17, there will be live entertainment on the Main Stage, a refreshment tent, the Balloon Glow at Mt. Vernon Airport, a carnival and Kids Zone, and the Tri-State Treasure Hunt which is typically held at 5 p.m., Jerdon said.
For the hunt, members of the Tri-State Treasure Hunting Club will place silver coins underground and let young people use metal detectors to find them. The kids will then get to keep the coins they find.
Jerdon said the goal of the hunt is to introduce people to treasure hunting as a hobby.
“It’s a fun thing for people who haven’t tried that before but would like to,” Jerdon said.
Friday’s live entertainment has not yet been finalized.
On Saturday, Oct. 18, there will be a parade at 3 p.m. Also that day, there will be a refreshment tent, a vendors marketplace, the Wheels for Wellness Bicycle Event, the Chili Cook-off, a carnival and Kids Zone, the Downtown Mt. Vernon Development Corporation’s Cruise-In, the Great Pumpkin Contest, and Balloons Over Mt. Vernon.
