MT. VERNON — For the second time in as many days, the Mt. Vernon Fire Department is investigating a suspicious fire.
Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent confirmed Wednesday the overnight fire in the 400 block of Forest Avenue is under investigation by the fire department, along with the Mt. Vernon Police Department.
“There are similarities in this fire and the one still under investigation from Monday night,” Sargent said.
Fire and police officials are also investigating a fire in the 1700 block of South 15th Street which
broke out around 11:30 p.m. Monday. A witness told police he heard an “explosion,” then saw a Cadillac speed away from the scene.
Sargent indicated the points of origin in both fires are under investigation, as well as the cause.
In the fire on Monday night, no one was home. In the fire at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday on Forest Avenue, a female occupant was able to escape without injury.
The woman reporting the fire told police, “someone has set my house on fire,” according to police logs.
Sargent said the homeowner/homeowners of the residence on Forest has not been identified.
He indicated the residence and a nearby shed were a total loss.
