MT. VERNON — — Citing his desire to serve and represent Southern Illinois in Springfield, Jefferson County Board Chairman Robert White announced Wednesday he is seeking the Republican nomination for state representative in the 115th District.
White made the announcement at the intersection of North Ninth and Harrison streets, one block north of the Jefferson County Courthouse. The announcement was moved from the courthouse at the last minute when White learned he would be in violation of a county ordinance forbidding political activity of an officeholder.
"I am running because I believe we need to continue to have strong leadership representing us in Springfield," White said. "We need someone who can lead on tough issues facing our state but who also listens to the concerns and needs of the people."
White owns Bob White Insurance Agency in Mt. Vernon. His wife Kristina and son Bobby were present at the news conference, along with GOP Chairman Mark Marlow and County Board members Robert Watt and John Keele.
