Municipal petitions filed

MT. VERNON — — Out of 14 petitions picked up from the City Clerk’s office for the February election, eight were filed Monday morning at 8 a.m. for various positions.

City Clerk, Jerilee Hopkins, said all of the petitions filed this morning will be entered simultaneously since those filing the petitions were in line at the office at 8 a.m. Any petitions received after that time will be filed in the order received.

She added that if more than one person files for the same position, a lottery will be held to decide the order of filing. A lottery basically decides which name will be listed first, Hopkins explained. If there is a lottery needed, it will be held within 9 days after the last day of the filing period and those involved with the lottery will receive notice of the time and place the lottery will be held.

As of Monday, the eight who filed for the municipal election are: Mary Jane Chesley for mayor, Jerilee Hopkins for city clerk, Mary Jo Pemberton and Doris Stover for city treasurer and Dennis McEnaney, Donte Moore, David Morgan and Todd Piper for city council.

Anyone who wishes to file for a position has until 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 26 to file their petition. The office will be closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 22 and 23, Hopkins said.

“It is hard to say how many [petitions] will come back,” Hopkins said. Each petition requires 26 signatures or 1 percent of the total vote for mayor from the last election.

In the county, no primaries are expected, which means a later filing deadline for candidates. For county village positions in the 2013 election, the first day to file a petition is Dec. 17 and the last day to file is Dec. 24.

In Belle Rive, positions available for election are village president, clerk and three trustee positions, each for four year terms.

In Bluford, positions are available for election are three village trustees, each for four year terms.

In Bonnie, there are two trustee positions up for election for two year terms and three trustee positions for four year terms.

In Ina, positions up for election are village president, village clerk and three trustee positions each for four year terms.

In Waltonville, the village president, secretary/treasurer and three trustee positions each for four year terms are up for election.

In Woodlawn, the village president, village clerk and three trustees positions, each at four year terms, are up for election in 2013.

Nominating petitions for any of the positions up for election in the 2013 consolidated election are available at the village hall or city hall in the municipality for which the elected positions are available.
