MT. VERNON -- — On Jan. 1, more than 200 new state laws will go into effect, including a state speed limit increase, a ban on the use of cell phones while driving and the legalization of medical marijuana.
Senate Bill 2356 raises the maximum speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on most interstates and toll highways. Certain counties with congested highways can opt out of the new speed limit by passing an ordinance.
The new cell phone ban is part of House Bill 1247. The state already prohibits texting and driving, but the new law bans the use of all hand-held cell phone devices behind the wheel. Bluetooth headsets, earpieces and voice activated commands are allowed.
