MT. VERNON – This summer's Movie in the Park series continues on Friday, July 26, with a showing of the Disney feature “Wreck-It Ralph.”
Organizers are hopeful the event will draw a large crowd after the success of last month's “Madagascar 3” showing, which brought in about 200 people.
“The appeal is the fact that it's free and also just having it in a setting where you can bring a (big) group together,” said Wes Plummer, recreation coordinator for the Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department. “It's a great chance for young children to get into the experience of the big screen and crowds. … It's just a very laid-back atmosphere.”
The Parks and Recreation Department hosts the Movie in the Park series for four months out of the year, June through September, on the third Friday of each month. The free program has been held for the past six years.
The July 26 showing of “Wreck-It Ralph” will take place at 8:30 p.m. at Veterans Park, 800 S. 27th St. Prior to the screening at 7:30 p.m., there will be a pre-activity for families. Organizers have not yet determined what the pre-activity will be.
This month's film is sponsored by Continental Tire. The sponsor pays the licensing fees for showing the movie.
Plummer said organizers decided on “Wreck-It Ralph” because it's a new Disney film that was released last summer.
“We try to get one of the new ones from the previous summer for Disney,” Plummer said, adding that there are “tight restrictions” on when Disney movies can be screened.
Films are projected on a 20-by-20 foot screen. Plummer said the park offers an ideal movie-watching experience.
“It's got a natural incline that lends itself to being able to see over people in front of you,” Plummer said. “It's a good sound system and a top-of-the-line projector.”
He added that many of the families who come to the event end up making a return trip.
“A lot of people plan on coming back if it fits their schedule,” Plummer said. “Everyone has a positive experience.”
In case of rain, the film will be shown inside the Rolland Lewis Community Building.
