Market Days coming downtown

MT. VERNON — The new Market Days event will be coming downtown to the former armory building next weekend.

Market Days will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday next weekend.

"We have been cleaning there like crazy," said Bonnie Jerdon, member of the Mt. Vernon Festivals Committee. "We have the outside area pretty well cleaned up and are putting our logo all over the sidewalks and parking area. We are looking forward to our first event on June 8."

Market Days is coinciding with the First Friday events scheduled downtown during the summer months. Market Days allow area residents to rent a 12x12 space to sell items. Admission to Market Days is free.

"We have about 30 vendors signed up right now, that's 30 booths," Jerdon said. "It's still not too late, we will take vendors right up to the day of the event, but we encourage people to get signed up early in the week so we can assign spaces and have everything planned."

And, there is a variety of items that will be sold next weekend.

"One of the good things about this event is that almost anything goes except illegal items, firearms and fireworks," Jerdon said. "It's an open field of what people can bring to sell. This first one, the kickoff for the season, we have a kids area where there will be bounce houses, face painting and lots of stuff for the younger people to do. We have barbecue and kettle corn so far for food vendors. We have people selling furniture, arts and crafts, clothing, jewelry, collectables and antiques. It's a wonderful mix of items that you can spend quite a bit of time looking at."

The Market Days will be held the first full weekend of each month throughout the summer.

"We've talked about adding days, but we aren't sure where to go with it at this point," Jerdon said. "We think we should be able to add more event days at the armory in the near future."
