MT. VERNON — — Derrick Gaither of Woodlawn has been sworn in as the newest officer for the Mt. Vernon Police Department. Gaither, the son of Tom and Denise Gaither of Woodlawn, has been serving as an officer in Woodlawn prior to his transfer to MVPD, according to Chief Chris Mendenall. Mendenall said with Gaither’s hiring, the department is up to full staff with 44 officers — two of which are funded through grants. Gaither has already received training at the police academy and will be completing 12 weeks of field training in Mt. Vernon. “I got into police work about a year ago, and fell in love with it,” Derrick Gaither said. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid.”
