MT. VERNON — —
Derek Smith, a self-taught pianist from Mt. Vernon, wowed the judges and audience at this year’s Cedarhurst’s Got Talent competition. Smith, who has never taken professional lessons and writes most of his own music, competed against seven other contestants for the $500 cash grand prize. Also chosen in the top three finalist category were vocalist Gret Barker-Morrison and guitarist/vocalist Alyssa Moore, both of Mt. Vernon.
Guest judges for the competition were Judi Heitmeyer, Nick Loafman and reigning Mrs. Illinois International Terri Karch. Brandon Bullard and Joe Gliosci served as emcees.
The evening event which helped raise funds for programming at Cedarhurst also included a silent auction. Among the items awarded to the generous bidders were original art by local and regional artists, jewelry and unique gift basket packages ranging from stress relief to auto detailing.
