National Day of Prayer on May 1

MT. VERNON — Community members are being invited to join the Mt. Vernon Prayer Breakfast Committee for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 1.

The service will start at noon on the east side of the Jefferson County Courthouse.

“Weather permitting, we’ll start as close to noon as possible,” said Prayer Committee spokeswoman Sherry Meadows. “If the weather is poor, we have made arrangements to have the service inside the courthouse.”

The National Day of Prayer is an event which brings together people from all walks of life to pray for specific areas of career, service and government. The theme this year is “One Voice United in Prayer.”

Anne Graham Lotz is the 2014 honorary chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. The mission of the task force is to “mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture.”

Confirmed persons giving prayers on National Day of Prayer are: Joann Davis, media; Chris Collins, business; Mike Green, education; Bruce Miles, military; Don Rector, government; Sherry Johnson, family; and the Rev. John Iffert, church.

Joe David Cummins will give the welcome and Don Bigham will give the benediction.

Special music will be provided by third grade students from District 80 under the direction of Janet Sinks.

The Mt. Vernon Prayer Breakfast Committee has scheduled its annual breakfast on Sept. 5. More information on that event will be forthcoming in the near future.
