---- — MT. VERNON — Amanda Scott was presented the 2013-2014 District 80 Scholarship during the Mt. Vernon City School Foundation Meeting on Tuesday.

“I was very surprised about the award but very thankful to receive it,” Scott said.

Scott was selected from 11 seniors at Mt. Vernon Township High School who will attend a college or other post-high-school educational institution.

The potential candidates of the scholarship also had to be children or grandchildren of current or retired District 80 employees or school board members.

Scott, the daughter of Richard Scott and Lora Scott, is a senior at MVTHS.

“We were so excited for her when we found out. She has put a lot of work into it,” said Lora, the mother of the recipient.

Scott said during the presentation she plans to attend Greenville College and study International and Cross Cultural Studies. She also plans to double major in Christian Ministry.

“With my degree I plan to work for a non-profit organization that helps

with third world countries,” Scott said.

The scholarship winner is chosen based on a number of criteria, including the student’s ACT score and high school grade point average; goals; involvement and participation in high school activities; community service, involvement in the community; attendance; employee loyalty, in which one point would be awarded for each year the employee or board member served District 80, up to 15 points maximum; and a 10-point bonus if the student attended Casey Middle School, information states.

“One of our most enjoyable activities for the year is announcing the scholarship winner. We are in our fourth year. We raise money throughout the year and it all goes back in for our students and staff,” said Kevin Settle, president of the Mt. Vernon City School Foundation.

The District 80 Scholarship is $1,500, and is funded by a gift from Dr. Kevin and Cheryl Settle.
