Chief appointment postponed

MT. VERNON — Jefferson Fire Protection District’s Board of Trustees has postponed naming a new chief until next month.

Following a brief meeting at the JFPD South 10th Street station on Tuesday, it was announced the board will not fill the position vacated by retiring Chief Mike Huntman until the board’s regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. May 19.

“Two of us are sick and we just decided to postpone action until our regular board meeting,” said trustee Terry Moore. Moore was re-appointed to the JFPD Board of Trustees on Monday by the Jefferson County Board. His appointment was recommended last Thursday during a Land, Tax and Appointments Committee meeting.

Moore said the department interviewed six candidates for the chief’s position on Tuesday.

The board went into executive session on Wednesday, discussing the candidates before making the announcement that no chief would be named immediately. Moore said the shift commanders will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the department until the new chief is appointed.

Huntman announced his retirement early this month after 30 years of service to the department.

During a meeting held on April 24, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to post the opening internally, conduct interviews and then select a candidate prior to Huntman’s departure. Huntman’s last day as chief was Wednesday.

Jefferson Fire Protection District is a volunteer/paid district. It includes about 30 volunteers, four paid officers and one part-time secretary.

The district covers a 220-square mile area with stations in Dix, Opdyke, Ina and headquarters in Mt. Vernon.
