MT. VERNON — May 1 was the start of a new trash contract for the city and includes curbside recycling.
According to information from the city, residents should expect to have recycling carts delivered at homes in the next few weeks from Republic Waste.
“Delivery of new carts for recyclables is underway,” information states. “Curbside recycling pickup is scheduled to begin on May 6 with pickup days being every other Tuesday and Thursday.”
The program is “single stream recycling” which means all recycling material except glass can go into the cart — there is no sorting. City officials met with Republic Waste earlier this week to discuss how pickup of recycle bins would be done.
The pickup days and areas are:
n Residents north of Broadway and west of Route 37 will have their pick up days on Tuesdays starting May 6;
n Residents north of Broadway and east of Route 37 will have their pickup day on Thursdays starting May 8;
n Residents south of Broadway and west of 22nd Street will have their pickup days on Tuesdays starting May 13; and
n Residents south of Broadway and east of 22nd Street will have their pickup days on Thursdays starting May 15.
Carts are to be placed at the curbside by 5 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day. Residents do not have to bag the material. All recyclable material should be placed loose in the cart.
Items which are allowed to be placed in the cart include:
n Newspapers, inserts, junk mail;
n Magazines, catalogs, envelopes;
n Paperback books, phone books;
n Cardboard, boxboard (cracker/cereal boxes);
n White and colored papers and cardstock;
n Aluminum cans and foil;
n Tin and steel cans, empty and rinsed;
n Plastic milk jugs, water/juice plastic bottles;
n Detergent and cleaning containers, empty and rinsed; and
n Plastic food containers, empty and rinsed.
