MT. VERNON — Dance teams and sponsors are currently being sought for the sixth annual Dancing With Our Stars fundraiser, set for Aug. 23 at Krieger’s Convention Center at the Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn.
The Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois puts on the event each year to raise money to provide financial assistance to at-risk girls, maintain and improve GSSI camps and develop Girl Scout leadership programs, states a GSSI news release. Nearly 14,000 girls are served by the GSSI.
“The funds benefit the girls so it’s definitely a good cause,” said Ruthie Alexander, a member of the Jefferson County Girl Scouts Administrative Team. “There are so many ways the funds are used.”
This year’s fundraiser
will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction. Then, a dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. and the Celebrity Star Dance contest will take place at 7:30 p.m.
After the stars take the floor, guests can dance until midnight to music provided by DJ Fred Klapetzky, the news release states.
Although the event isn’t until August, GSSI officials encourage those who wish to enter the contest to sign up now and start developing their dance routine.
“Routines typically consist of community members who are willing to put together a dance group and entertain the audience for a great cause,” said Emily Kimmey, GSSI director of development, in the news release. “We are in the process now of filling our dance card, so we encourage our community members to contact us to make this year’s event the most successful DWOS yet.”
The number of teams competing varies from year to year, but is typically between six and 10, Alexander said.
Each team develops a dance routine and performs it in front of a panel of judges. Teams then receive a score from the judges.
