Parade plans underway

MT. VERNON — The city council will be asked Monday to close streets to allow a parade for the Gold Wing Road Riders Summer Rally.

The parade, part of many activities planned for the rally, is to take place on July 25.

“They are expecting between 100 and 200 motorcycles,” said Tourism Director Bonnie Jerdon. “They asked our office about the rally, and one of the things they have done at other locations is a parade. We love a parade.”

The council will be asked to close Main Street from Seventh Street to Illinois Route 37 — also known as 10th Street — and 10th Street from Jordan to Newby from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on July 25 for the parade.

“We have been working with the Fall Fest Committee to change up the old parade route,” Jerdon said. “This is the first time we will use the altered parade route. This will give us a chance to try it out before we put the big parade on it.”

Jerdon said the Gold Wing Road Riders is extending an invitation to local motorcycle enthusiasts to be part of the parade and all events during the rally.

“Their theme is ‘Saluting Our Heroes,’” Jerdon said. “They are planning activities to honor veterans and first responders.”

In other business, the council will:

n Hear a quote of results for copier leases;

n Hear a request to seek bids for event tents for the Tourism Department;

n Hear a request to seek bids to update the Municipal Building West sign with a new logo, graphics and electronic message center;

n Hold a first reading on rezoning property at 2307 Benton Rd., from B2 to R1 requested by Joe and Lori Ilbery;

n Discuss a resolution approving a letter of agreement for professional engineering services with Rhutasel and Associates regarding Ambassador Road improvmeents; and

n Discuss the re-appointment of Sarah Sledge and Kaycee Cooper to the Tourism Advisory Board.

The council will meet 7 p.m. on Monday at the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park.
