MT. VERNON — District 80 Schools plan to form a committee to investigate building a new gymnasium for the Casey Middle School.
The gym, if built, may be located on a lot just south of the Casey facility that is owned by the district. However, that is just one possibility as no firm decision on a location has yet been reached.
A Casey Expansion Committee will be created in the fall to examine the feasibility of constructing a new gym and possibly establishing a new track and soccer field.
Included on the committee will be a school board member, a school administrator, the athletic director, coaches and a member of the general public, said Superintendent Mike Green.
“The committee would get together in the fall to discuss planning (and) a source of revenue,” Green said. “There’s room on several places to put the gym on property we currently own.”
Forming the committee was discussed at the May 14 meeting of the District 80 Board of Education.
At the same meeting, board members announced the formation of a special Social Studies Committee, which will likely hold its first meeting before the end of the current school year.
This group will look at implementing a Social Studies curriculum for kindergarten through third- graders at the district, likely for the 2015-2016 school year. Currently, Social Studies classes begin at fourth grade.
Both the new gym and Social Studies projects were goals to come out of the District 80 Board’s annual two-day retreat held Jan. 17 and 18.
Prior to the current school year, Casey students had access to two gyms, one at the Casey facility and the other at the Dr. Andy Hall Early Education Center.
At that time, sixth- graders were at Andy Hall for most of their classes while seventh- and eighth-graders were at Casey.
