---- — MT. VERNON — The much-anticipated opening of a nationally-recognized crafts and home décor center in Mt. Vernon has been scheduled.

Officials of Hobby Lobby, who are opening a new store in Times Square Mall, have announced a grand opening will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 2.

Marla Neff is the store manager of the 53,000 square foot retail facility, according to a company news release.

“By bringing our distinct, service-oriented craft and home décor shopping experience to the community, Hobby Lobby shares in the excitement area shoppers have expressed,” stated John Schumacher, assistant vice-president of advertising. “The reception we have received, from the time of our first announcement to now, has been welcoming and enthusiastic.”

Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., headquartered in Oklahoma City, Okla., began as Greco, a miniature picture frames company in 1970. When David Green moved his business from the family’s garage to a 300 square foot retail space in 1972, Hobby Lobby was founded. Today, Hobby Lobby has nearly 600 stores across the nation that average 55,000 square feet in size.

The retailer offers more than 70,000 crafting and home décor products in its stores. Departments include floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets, home accents, wearable art, arts and crafts, jewelry making, scrapbooking and paper crafting supplies.

Store hours have been scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sunday.

Sansone Group and Pine Tree Commercial Realty, owners of the mall, are undergoing major renovations at the mall.

In addition to the Hobby Lobby opening, Big Lots is expected to announce its grand opening in the coming weeks. Ross Dress for Less has been previously announced as a mall tenant, along with Rue 21, which opened several weeks ago.

“Any time there is new retail, new businesses, it helps to spurt growth. We have a vote of confidence in your community and we hope this project spurs additional growth within the community,” said Jim Sansone, one of the partners of the Sansone Group in an earlier interview.

Moe’s Southwest Grill will occupy one of the spaces in the building being constructed at the north entrance to the mall. Other tenants for that frontage are being sought, reported Karen Shaw, senior associate in retail for the Sansone Group.
