Memerie Duncan Monfort, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Monfort, has enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves.

Pursie Pipes of Mt. Vernon yesterday riddled the Saline County golf course at Eldorado with 30-34 - 64, six strokes under par, to capture his eighth Southern Illinois golf championship.

The Jefferson County Housing Authority is moving its main office from its temporary location in a housing unit on Lamar Avenue to the small office building at 1000 S. Ninth St.

Marybeth Bolerjack, previously a United Way volunteer, was appointed executive director for United Way of Jefferson County at a Wednesday meeting of the board.

The council told City Manager Roy L. Payne and Finance Director John Lunini to bring capital budget items totaling nearly $1 million to the council at its meeting next week. In addition to the estimated annual cost of $133,354 for coverage of the 42nd Street fire station 24 hours a day, the proposed package includes $297,500 in capital expenditures for the Public Utilities Department — without raising water and sewage rates.
