Judge hands down 12-year sentence

---- — MT. VERNON — A Mt. Vernon man has been sentenced to 12 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections for a sex crime committed earlier this year.

Michael Bratcher, 26, entered the guilty plea Tuesday afternoon before Judge Barry Vaughan, according to State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman. Bratcher pleaded guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Court records state on or about April 20 of this year Bratcher engaged in an act of sexual penetration with a minor under the age of 13. The victim was 6-years-old.

Two lesser counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse were dismissed by the state in return for the prison sentence. Bratcher must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, or a minimum of 10 years. He will also be on parole from three years to life, depending on action taken by the parole board.
