District 80 receives grant for roof project

MT. VERNON – District 80 has been awarded a $50,000 state grant that will help fund a substantial new roofing project at Casey Middle School.

The estimated $149,000 project involves replacing the roof on the main three-story building at Casey. The current roof is aging and cracked, said Superintendent Mike Green.

“It's 23 years old. It was put on in 1990, and it really wasn't going to make it through another winter,” Green said. “We had several major leaks this year in the computer lab.”

The District 80 Board of Education discussed the roof project at their regular monthly meeting Wednesday night.

Green said he was “pleasantly surprised” the district received the state grant.

Last year, the Illinois State Board of Education made available $50 million in maintenance grant funding schools could apply for. This year, only $10 million was available. The $10 million was left over from last year's $50 million allocation, Green said.

“We were glad that they left that $10 million in there to help schools out,” Green said.

Just prior to the meeting Wednesday, District 80 board members took an hour-long tour of Casey Middle School, where a major expansion is underway.

Green said the expansion remains on schedule and that the school should be ready for teachers and students by Aug. 15.

Also on Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent Aletta Lawrence gave the board an update on this year's summer school program, which took place in June.

This year, the program was held at the J.L. Buford Intermediate Center rather than at the Primary Center. This allowed crews to complete “deep cleaning work” at the Primary Center, Lawrence said.

“Having it at Buford worked out really well,” Lawrence said.

Other board actions Wednesday included:

n Approval of a $22,000 expenditure to implement the first year of the Nancy Larson Science Curriculum. The program will cost a total of $56,000 over a five-year period.

n Hearing of reports on the Head Start program, summer maintenance projects, and energy saving initiatives.

n Discussion of the fiscal year 2013 budget.

n Approval of an athletic fields agreement with Summersville District 79, and an athletic fields request from St. Mary School.
