DIX — Illinois State Police has identified the truck driver killed early Monday morning in an accident on Interstate 57 at mile post 103.
Raymond Burt, 44, of Kentwood, La., was fatally injured when his semi rear-ended another semi driven by T.J. Cork Dilbert, 32, of Jacksonville, Fla. Both vehicles were northbound.
State Police said Dilbert was at the entrance ramp to I-57 when he observed a vehicle merging onto the interstate. He slowed his vehicle to allow for that merge. Burt failed to reduce speed to avoid the crash. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway onto the right shoulder.
Burt was ejected from his vehicle. Burt and a passenger, 32-year-old Jenely B. Dilbert, also of Jacksonville, were taken to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center with injuries. Burt was taken to Crossroads Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the Jefferson County coroner.
The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for about five hours for cleanup of the scene and crash investigation. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Dix exit.
