MT. VERNON — —
The Mt. Vernon Memorial VFW Post 9233 will host its 21st annual “Buddy Poppy” Salute to all U.S. war veterans.
The event will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at center court in Times Square Mall.
The theme this year will be “Thanks to the Greatest Generation,” said VFW member Jim Nichols.
The main speaker for this year’s event will be Gene Tucker, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church. Tucker may also sing, Nichols said.
Kenneth C. Flanagan, past commander, will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Several of the participants in the salute to veterans have participated in many, if not all, of the 21 events, said VFW Post 9233 Commander Bruce Miles.
The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, a speech by Mt. Vernon Mayor Mary Jane Chesley and songs if time allows.
At 11 a.m., Flanagan will mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month with the striking of the bell. A minute of silence will be followed by the reading of the roll call of members of Post 9233 who have passed away since it was charted on April 8, 1992.
Cheryl Price Hunsell will place roses at crosses symbolic of those at Flanders Field.
All people are invited to the free event at the mall, Miles said.
In the week leading up to the event, beginning Nov. 3, VFW members will be selling Buddy Poppies around town to raise money for the post’s relief fund, which helps veterans, their widows and orphans. Miles said the poppies are made by disabled veterans as well.
