MT. VERNON — —
Toys for Kids of Jefferson County will host a bake sale and silent auction Nov. 4.
The event, beginning at 5 p.m., will be held at West Salem Trinity United Methodist Church, 4212 Broadway, said Toys for Kids member Lacey Copple.
“West Salem Church is in charge of it all,” she said. “People from the church are making things, and they are getting donated items from Kroger and local bakeries. The bake sale will be from 5 to 6.”
The silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. Wendy Denzler, member of United Methodists in Action, said the auction will feature a wide variety of items.
“We’ve been canvassing businesses in the Mt. Vernon area,” she said. “We have everything from gift certificates for veterinary services to recreational things, free games of golf, jewelry and lots of gift certificates from area restaurants. We have some wonderful gift baskets, lots of collectibles, and there will be a wide variety of artwork from area artists. There is quite a bit of artwork from Rend Lake College students as well as artists already established in the area.”
Denzler said the silent auction will also feature certificates for overnight hotel room stays in local hotels in the area.
During the bake sale and preview time for the silent auction, two barbershop quartets — one comprising men, and one all women — will perform, Denzler said.
United Methodists in Action has been organizing the event for about six months, she said, and it is to be the main fundraiser for Toys for Kids of Jefferson County.
“The community is invited and welcome,” she said. “We’d love to have everybody who can come show up for this.”
Toys For Kids’ earlier fundraiser, a spaghetti dinner at Ninth St. Grill, raised about $1,000 in three hours, Copple said.
Registration for Toys for Kids will begin Tuesday, Nov. 13, she said.
The toy distribution will take place Dec. 7, she said. Boxes for donations will be placed at area businesses by Nov. 1, and the annual Continental Tire the Americas toy run will be held Nov. 10.
