Jefferson County's Highway Committee recommended the maximum amount of tax levies for its major funds at its monthly meeting Thursday.
Highway Engineer Brandon Simmons suggested 4.95 percent increases in the County Highway, County Bridge, and Federal Matching Aid funds.
Budgets for those accounts and the Motor Fuel Tax Fund were also approved. The County Highway Fund budget is $334,991 and the remaining two fund budgets are $154,773. A budget of $479,000 was approved for MFT, which is not levied. The county's total budget is $1.4 million.
After some discussion, the Committee will recommend to the full board on Monday the purchase of a crew cab F-250 truck, at an estimated cost of $27,000 through Central Management Services, a state-operated clearinghouse.
Simmons presented in writing a list of the department's fleet of vehicles — the oldest 24-years-old with over 200,000 miles. Simmons also said that every vehicle in the department has over 100,000 miles.
Board member Jim Laird voted no against the purchase, as well as every motion on the proposed tax levies and budgets.
In other news, the Committee approved engineering agreements through HLR, based in Springfield, for the Reardon Lane and Boyd Road bridge projects. The engineering agreements were for $25,000 and $24,000, respectively. Committee members also formalized an engineering agreement for improvement of the Log Cabin Road bridge through a resolution.
The monthly fuel bid of $2.85 for gasohol and $3.21 for biodiesel fuel from Synenergy Inc. was also approved.
Simmons reported construction is scheduled to begin next week by Perry County Construction on the Violet Road Bridge project. The bridge is located about ¼ mile west of Miller Lake Road. The road will be closed for the duration of the project — approximately two months, according to Simmons.
Simmons also reported maintenance crews will be performing centerline joint sealing on various locations throughout the fall. Motorists should be aware that these locations will be reduced to one lane for short periods.
