MT. VERNON – The Granada Center for the Performing Arts is aiming for an eclectic mix of titles for this season’s Classic Kids Matinee.
Both live action and animated films will be featured in the 2013-2014 season, along with concessions and prizes, said Barbara D’Arcy, president of Granada’s Board of Directors.
“It’s giving an opportunity to a lot of children to go to the movies who wouldn’t ordinarily get to do that,” D’Arcy said of the matinee program. “It does give a great opportunity for parents and children to do something together in our historic theater, which I’m very proud of.”
The Granada holds the Classic Kids Matinee each year from October to May. A total of eight films are shown, one each month, and admission is free. Concessions are available for a small fee.
This season’s list of films include: “Open Season 2” on Oct. 12, “The Little Rascals” on Nov. 9, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on Dec. 7, “E.T.” on Jan. 11, “Despicable Me 2” on Feb. 8, “Gnomeo & Juliet” on March 8, “The Love Bug” on April 12, and “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” on May 10.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 2 p.m. for most screenings. The one exception is the December showing of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” when doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 4 p.m.
The reason for the different start times in December is so the event coincides with the Downtown Christmas Parade, D’Arcy said. The Grinch himself is also expected to make an appearance at the December screening, she said.
Several local banks and St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital are sponsoring this season’s films.
Before each show, a prize drawing will be held. The prize this season will be a free birthday party at the Froggeez family fun center.
