Carmi teen’s body recovered
BENTON — Nearly 27 hours after going missing, the body of Emilie Jo Turrentine, 18, of Carmi, was recovered by divers Tuesday afternoon at Rend Lake.
Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones said Turrentine’s body was recovered shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday in about 10 feet of water.
Turrentine had been missing since shortly after 11 a.m. Monday when she was swimming with four other friends off a pontoon boat.
Search and rescue teams spent the rest of Monday looking for the missing teen, calling off the search around 10 p.m., and resumed at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Search crews concentrated their efforts around a 300 yard radius north of Illinois Highway 154, west of Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park.
Rend Lake Search and Rescue, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Sesser Fire Department were involved in the recovery efforts.
No foul play is suspected and drugs and alcohol were not involved, according to the sheriff.
Turrentine had just celebrated her 18th birthday a week ago today.
