Beck resigns, donates to Crime Stoppers

MT. VERNON — Bill Beck, longtime member of the Jefferson County Crime Stoppers, made a parting gift to the organization at its monthly meeting Thursday morning.

Beck submitted his resignation to the organization in August, and presented Crime Stoppers with a $5,000 donation.

Beck, who has served on the executive board of the organization as its vice president, served on the Jefferson County Crime Stoppers Board of Directors for 26 years.

“It's a good organization, doing a lot of good things,” Beck said during Thursday's meeting.

“With my new obligation as a member of the Mt. Vernon Township High School Board of Education, it was time for me to give up some of the work I do in other non-profit organizations,” he added.

“We are losing a valuable member of our organization today,” said President Richard Endsley. “I tried to give him $10 to stay on, but he wouldn't take it,” he joked.

The Crime Stoppers Board also lost its treasurer, Melody True of People's National Bank, who submitted her resignation last month, citing a work conflict. True will be recognized with a certificate of appreciation, it was reported.

Duane Gulley of Old National Bank was nominated as a board replacement for one of the two vacancies, and the nominating committee will seek another candidate.

Eddie Joe Marks was nominated to serve on the Nominating Committee.

Major Scott Burge of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was elected as the organization's new treasurer; and Rick Hayes was nominated and elected vice president.

The organization is continuing work as the host of the Illinois State Crime Stoppers convention in 2015. Committees have been assigned for the convention, which will be held on the second weekend of May.

A location for the event has not been announced to date. Burge and Coordinator Sharon Martin have been assigned to make a recommendation to the Board.

Copies of the latest Watchdog Quarterly were made available and given to board members for distribution.
